Something wasn’t right.

I’d spent the better part of my entire adult life learning to trust my instincts and follow my gut. I did it when I was in the Army, and I did it every day at Harper Security.

Right now, my gut was telling me that something had happened with Tarryn. Something she was refusing to share with me.

All the signs were there, too. It was the way she tensed when I touched her, it was her inability to look me in the eye, and it was the fact that she didn’t seem even remotely interested in seeing me again.

I didn’t understand what went wrong. She had been happy last night. Dinner was great, and what happened back at her house was even better. Tarryn fell asleep in my arms last night with her body being so relaxed. It was the exact opposite of this morning, and I hated to think that she woke up regretting what had happened between us.

But if that was the case, even if I didn’t like it, I wanted her to tell me about it. I’d want us to have a chance to talk about it and work through it. I liked her enough to want to make this work.

No matter how many different ways I’d offered to see her today, she didn’t take me up on any of them. In fact, I was a little shocked to see how hard she was pushing to keep me away.

Being as strong-willed as she was, I wouldn’t have been surprised if she was the kind of woman who wanted to have some time to herself to do her own thing. I wanted to see her again and spend time with her, but it didn’t have to be immediately. And I certainly didn’t want it to be at her expense.

It didn’t need to be today, either; however, a little enthusiasm on her part would have gone a long way in reassuring me that we were on the same page.

This was new. We were figuring each other out, and it was only natural we’d face obstacles. But this seemed a bit too early for that. And if Tarryn didn’t communicate with me, I couldn’t exactly give her what was important. If we were going to have a fighting chance, communication was key.

It had been about an hour since I left Tarryn’s place. I’d come home, grabbed a shower, and changed my clothes. I was going to make myself some breakfast, but I was too concerned about the woman I’d spent my night with last night.

Something was bothering her, and I needed to know what it was.

I might have told Nixon earlier this morning that I’d call him after I left Tarryn’s place so we could meet up and talk about some new intel on my case, but I was entirely too distracted by the shift in Tarryn’s attitude toward me that I knew any attempts to concentrate on the case would be futile.

I told her I’d wait for her to call; however, I had a nagging suspicion that no call would ever come.
